Winsock Errors Downloading From Dial Data

There are a few types of winsock errors, and the fix will depend on which one you get, and whether or not you are initially getting any bytes of data.

Look over on the lower left area of the download window where it says "Current Bytes". If it says zero underneith, then you are not connecting to Dial Data's servers. This almost always points to either you not being online or connected to the internet, or you have a firewall keeping our program from accessing the internet.

You can check your internet connection by simply opening Microsoft's Internet Explorer, or any other web browser like Netscape or Firefox, or internet program like AOL (America Online). The icon for Microsoft's Internet Explorer is a little blue "e". It should either be on your desktop or under your start menu in the bottom left corner. If these programs are able to connect to the internet ok, and you are seeing your default web site, then your internet connection is not the problem.

If you are currenlty connected to the internet, then you most likely are having connection problems because of either a hardware or software firewall. Click here for help trying to troubleshoot your firewall.

It is also possible that there might have been a small internet glitch when you tried to connect to Dial Data, either on your internet connection, or Dial Data's. Give it a few minutes and try again. Sometimes in the past Dial Data's servers have not been available. This tends to happen between the market close at 4pm until around 7pm. During this time Dial Data is compiling all the data for that day, so they may not have all there servers available. This is usually signified by the Winsock Error : "... rejected by the host server ..."

If you are getting a certain number of bytes where it says "Current Bytes", then you are connected to the internet ok, and the problem is of a different nature. If you are getting between 400 and 600 bytes (usually 525) before you get the Winsock Error, then the program is trying to log in to Dial Data, but the login is unsuccesful.

Double check your Dial Data username, password and charge code in the Program Options with the username, password and charge code that Dial Data gave you. If what you entered does not match what is on Dial Data's servers, then you won't be able to log in. You may have to call Dial Data at 1-800-832-2878 to make sure what you have matches what they have. We have had a few users in the past where Dial Data entered the wrong information on their servers.
